Vaishnava aagamas belong to two major categories : Vaikanasa and Paancharaathra. Vaikaanasa sect seems to have been formulated by a sage called Vikanasha. Paancharathra is said to have emanated from Lord himself. Origins of paancharathra are in Varaaha Purana (if I remember correct) wherein Naarayana - one of the 12 sons of adhthi - performs a yagna for 5 nights in succession to achieve the Vishnu position. 5 Nights - 5 Rathiris - and hence paancha (five) raathra.
All Vishnu temples in Tamilnadu - need to follow one of these aagamas. I can't remember what system the 2 popular temples - Tirupathi and Srirangam follow
There are a number of books attached to these schools. Lot of variations. Mareechi Samhita is one such Vaikhanasha aagama Book. It talks about town planning.
Uttaramerur seems to have built as per this text book. Sort of word by word
K.A.Neelakanda sastri has done extensive research on Uttaramerur town planning. Dr.Nagasamy has also worked on the subject.
