ananda vikadan magazine has one of the most succesful publishing houses today. their brittanica encyclopedia is world class.
but the origin of the publishing house for books( other than magazines) originated with vasan himself. the main loser was kalki. kalki when under the employ of anandavikadan ( at salaries ranging from 100- 400 with a ford car) wrote a lot of articles , stories and reviews for ananda vikadan. in fact there were accusations prevalent at that time that he forced out other's articles as well as made them print without a by line. pudumai pithan has much to say about it. in fact the best works of devan were immidetly after kalki left AV.
after kalki left AV he wanted to group his writings and publish them as books. however legal opinion deterred him. as he was under an employment those days the inntelectual property of his writings were shared by both the magazine and him.
kalki wanting to avoid a direct confrontation with the media moghul vasan tried a small trick. he made sinna annamalai of tamil pannai to print a book with some of his ananda vikadan articles. a raging vasan threatened to sue. a profound apology was given and all was forgiven. now kalki wrote straight to vasan with the request. kalki had in the sarting years of his personal magazine criticised almost every act of vasan. hence vasan wrote back saying he had starting a publishing house in mind and could not spare kalki's articles for a similar purpose. several years after kalki died vasan phoned up his son rajendran and told him the rights now belonged to rajendran as the legal heir. a clever rajendran asked for it in writing and got it. however ananda vikadans publishing house was not started till much later. i think it happened after vasns death.
