freinds, the thoniappar shrine in seerkali also has a chamber beneath. that is the the ground floor is closed on all four sides. in front of it the brahmapureeswarar lingam complex and above on it is the first floor on which the giant thoniappar is sitting on a boat. above the thoniapar shrine is the giant doom within which the sattai-nathar shrine stands.
so the what is inside the ground floor which is closed on all four sides? was it a storehouse for weapons or rice or jewellaries or copper plares? is it then a secet hiding chambaer for the army?
any ideas? the temple is with dharumai adheenam and does not reveal these facts in its handouts

wow a three storey temple..
what are the earliest mentions of thoniappar shrine. shiva as the celestial boatman.
there are some records of malik kafurs army attacking this temple soon after chidambaram.
any records on whther the temple was razed or only looted.
when you cross sirkali the tall outer walls of the temple remind you of a fort.
