an excellent posting on Uraiyur, one of the early capitals of cholas

once there was a saying ' oorenappaduvathu uraiyur"

also called mukkiswaram- a devaram padal petra sthalam.

I havent personally seen this sculpture but many of them are supposedly in the panchavarneshwarar temple.


the other and more accepted version is that a rooster in the way of the royal caprisoned elephant refused to give way.

there are other beautiful sculptures in the temple. one being the frm of 5 women which together constitute a horse.

another of a mythical animal with birds feet, human body and the head of a elephant.
