dear freinds, one historic place in chidambaram is the so called homa kulam ( pronounced as the omakulam by natives). it is here the nandanar held his satyagraha in the 10th century. the place he was prevented entering the town by the dheekshidhars and caste hindus like vellalahs. he sat there for days and months . the popularity grew and people started worshiping him. then the caste hindus and preists planned a action to sabotage his popularity.
they met him there and told him to enter a pyre lit for him as desired by lord shiva. they told him that lord shiva had told this in their dream. the public also beleived this and nandhanar had no choice but to enter the pyre to die. his ashes were carried to the temple.
he was rechristined as thirunalaipovar. and his memories were systematically erased.
in 1920 gandhiji visited chidambaram. when he heard nandans story he was moved and told that nandan's satyagraha is no smaller than his own. he layed foundation for his temple there which still stands here.
the place is a part of chidambaram town and a dheekshidhar comes daily to perform poojah to his shrine.
