On this auspicious occasion of GKC and Darasuram being proclaimed as World Heritage, let us assume that more of Westerners are likely to visit our prides and do not confine themselves only to Egypt - mummies and pyramids!
Re GKC, Veerammal story is gapsa. But Rajendra provided Udanirukkai to one Paravai (Dancer) in his Chariot and roamed in the streets of Thiruvarur - darshaned Thiageswarar along with her- and the emissaries from GKC begged her to release / advise Rajendra to return to GKC. Inscriptional evidences are there in Thiruvarur.
During RR's time, Rajendra was Maadandanayaka (Commander-in- Chief) of Chozha army (North) and was stationed in Thiruvottiyur (Part of Chennai now) and followed Laguleesam. There are enough mails on this subject already in our Group.
And he was extending in all the four directions - including East! Obviously Thanjai was not the centre point for his empire. Another thing. Most of us - atleast I - blieved that GKC was established by Rajendra. It was not so. It already existed as a prosperous township during Rajaraja's period itself! Kumbakonam (Pahzyarai - Nandhipuram) - Udayarkudi(Veeranam) and GKC form a perfect triangle. Dr. Rajavelu says Esalam - Near Tindivanam - was the Capital of Kulothunga! - for some years!
Re GKC Temple, I share the views of Gokul.
Please use search mode and try to read earlier mails on these subjects - GKC - Udyarkudi -Nandhipuram - Laguleesam etc.
Please find time to read the mails of Srihari as well.
We can move forward from higher planes.. Fondly, sps
I agree with Gokul and SB that GKC was built to accomodate the growing needs of a mighty empire and as a mark of victory upto Ganga
I dont think the King actually lead the expeditions himself
Veerammall....all I can say is Vikraman created a similar charector in NN who RR falls in love with in one of those small isles...authors imagination...
If you are really interested in reading more about GKC its construction and timeframe Akillans Vengaiyin Mainthan is a better novel
