It was once a flourishing ancient port city known as Kaveripoompattinam, which was the capital of theearly Chola kings.It is located near the mouth of theCauveri river, aside the sea coast which is called sangamam. The Holy River Cauveri sangamam (the river ends here) with Bay of Bengal in Poompuhar Costal
    area. Much of the town was washed away by what is now speculated to be a tsunami around 500 AD. The famous Art Gallery called as Kalaikoodam is here which give the historical memories of Tamil literature “Silappathiharam”.
