This is a fitting lead ..

to discuss Rajendra - since his assuming Yuvaraja happened in 1012 CE and we are just 999 years away and moving towards its 1000th Year commemoration !!

Thanks to Dr. M. Rajendran IAS - who particularly brought this out in our 9th Annual meet on the 3rd July 2011.

Let me continue the lead which you already initiated ..

bing on the NORTH EAST outer wall of the Sanctum..

" Naam kodhuthanavum.. nam akkan koduthanavum... " in the big temple North East wall is supposedly the FIRST INSCRIPTION thus scribed..

Why RRC did not prefer to do this ? there can be assumptions..

But since these inscriptions are of Land Grants and not related to the History of the Temple, they might have taken time to scribe them.


As mentioned earlier, from the 25th year of RRC ( 1010 CE) to the 3rd of Rj C ( 1017 CE) - there appears to have been no major activity except related to Temple activities / Sivasaranasekaran entering Thilaparvatham and coming out as Rajendra.

He should have been burdened with accumulated works needing priority.

He was operating from Chidambaram. Means HE did not want Thanjai to be disturbed..

See how THE TIME unfolds the scene right in front of us with Rs. 100000 Crores of worth of Gold / precious stones / ornamaments found in Trivandum and the hitherto subdued PADHAMANABA waking up to HECTIC ACTIVITIES and Devotees thronging to see the glimpse.. !!

Such thronging of Pilgrims from all over the neighbouring states - cutting across political affliations - should have posed Security threat to Thanjai Political activities and Rajendra should have planned to Transfer his Capital ..

And his Empire was expanding..

So he might have selected a PLAIN BARREN VAST LAND - Closer to Udayarkudi (settlement of Royal families),
Veeranam (no water issues )
reachable from Pazharai - Chidambaram - Kanchi too.

And need to build a replica (smaller) temple too ..

It is widely postulated (SRB) that the Chandeswara in GKC Vimanam was none other than Rajendra himself !!

Rajaraja became an ardent Siva devotee - almost assumed to be a Nayanmar (most of the Nayanmar list include Kings from Kalabras - Pallavas - Pandyas - cheras ).. His wife Danthisakthividangi also assumed to be Pavarai nachiyar of sundara !!

But Rajendra was different...

While RRC planned his entire YOUTH in Planning his Political Career when appropriate - always realising he was a Prime target after the demise of Adithakarikalan - and later on when assumed, consolidated his position with the help of all those around him including Rajendra ..

Rajendra should have been hardened personality right from the invasion of Kandalurchalai in his late teens till a Raichur raid (1006 CE - Hattur inscriptions ) conquering and eliminating Satyachreyan..

and next ten years passed on differently with temple building - performing rites for his father " Periyadevar " ..

I recall of having a read a 4th year of Rajendra (1016 CE) inscription in Thiruvaiyaru .. related to some grant / Periyadevar and I somehow
felt Rajendra might have HEAVED A SIGH OF RELIEF..,ATLAST it is OVER!!

And he shifts to Chidambaram..
Plans for New Capital.. at GKC ..
Plans for a vast Lake .. almost comparable with Veeranam..

And unfolds his Agenda..

In 1015 AD itself he establishes friendly ties with China..
and invades Kadaram etc...

he moved towards NORTH.. reinforced friendship wth Vikramadithan and others.. and subdued any rebels and brought GANGES WATER and FILLED
IT IN CHOLA - GANGA !! Made it as Jalasthamba !!

For the upkeep of GKC ..

No need to acquire / make Fresh grants..

More than enough is available with Peruvudayar..

Let some of the grants (produces from the tax free lands) be shifted from there to GKC..

Rajendra's PRIORITY appears to be more SOCIAL ORIENTED...
Like creating a Vast Lake which will be more useful..
Not making another Big temple..
Not acquiring more lands for GKC...
