• Dear all
i dont know how many of you watched the SUN TV pongal programmes....I managed a few on saturday mostly movie based with plenty of ads

The only two exceptions were Jallikattu and Pongalopongal by Vijalakshmi Navaneetha Krishnan.....No sponsors at all...Yet you had a wealth of tamil culture in them

    Jallikattu....
They claimed Jallikattu was derived from the name Salii kaasu which was tied to the horns of the bulls in ancient days and Sall became Jalli by the british and hence Jallikattu....

Apparantly it started when the cowherds were migrating and the bulls were fighting and running amock and the lads used to overpower them and stop them and this became a mark of a man...If he had the bravaery valour and strength to do this then he would be a fit husband be a worthy man to the girls...

The alanganallur jallikattu is a offering to the local deity muniswarar and is a blood offering they claim no one will come and offer human blood this way all the blood from the injured is our offering to the god......

    Scientific basis of Tamils....

They claim you have to plant 180 saplings( nathu) within a cycle tube diamaeter for them to grow well....but did you know what scale ancient tamils used....

Nandu valaya vara Nell nadanum(ie a crab should be able to go between two naathu that was the spacing)
Nari(fox) valayavara Varahu(something similar to Ragi)
    Kaalai(bull) valaya vara Thuvarai(grams)
    Vandi*(cart) Valaya vara Vaalai(banana)
    There(Chariot) valayavara Thennai(coconut)

If you look at the spacing of all these its so scientific ...the spacing to promote growth.....

another tidbit was kambar was going to a place called mudikarai in thenpandi naadu and was lost...he asked a cowherd thambi mudikaraikku eppadi povathu....and he replied adikarai pidithu ponal mudikarai varum....Kambar was puzzled he hadnt come across such statement in all his tamil knowledge and he humbly asked thambi enakku vizhangavillai puriya sol...and the cowherd explained that eriyin karai adivaram was called adikarai in ramnad and if you follwed that you ll reach mudikarai(kambar being a neer sezhikkum cholanataar did not know the adikarai concept apparently)
