Among the many unique aspects of the cave temple, one of the noteworthy features is the authentic portrait sculptures of two pallava kings - "simhavishnu pothrathirajan" and "mahendra pothrathirajan" as the epigraphs on top of their sculptures call them - along with their two wives. They have been given place in niches alongside the gods.
The vaishnavite inclination of the cave temple and the portrayal of two kings makes us think that it could have been the work of narasimhavarman. But no evidence to support this. Infact scholars are questioning the very identification of simhavishnu and mahendra - as which simhavishnu and which mahendra ?
