Dear Venkateswaran,
On behalf of our Group, a copy of the Magudagamam book was handed over to Dr. Kudavoil Balu and also Dr. Kalaikkovan. Gokul from Singapore and Kamal from Japan coordinated on this.
Dr. Kudavoil has confirmed the following :
1. Pondichery Institute of Indology has published Magudagamam with 30 photographs; 2. Saraswathi Mahal Catelogue Vol XVIII - no: 15269 is related to Magudagamah; PPS Sastri, Saraswathi Mahal Library - it is seen that Dr. A.C.Burnell's Catelogue No: 11428 - paper 17.5" x 1" - 87 leaves - 4 to 5 lines each page - in about 2000 Grantha - beginning with "Skanthaya namaha .. " is bearing the remarks "QUOTE" : "The manuscript is in a fairly good condition. Dr. Burnell thinks that this work deal with ritual to be observed in the big temple at Tanjore ". UNQUOTE. 4. Dr. R.Nagaswamy in his Article " Iconography and Significance of the Brahadeswara Temple, Thanjavur " (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia) has made the follg observations (QUOTE - summarised) i) Srikantha - Dakshinameru - Mahameru :: Are those of mounts Meru - Mandara - Kailasa. Rajasimha Pallava erected Kailasanatha Temple of Kanchi liken to the Kailasa Mountain. The term Dakshinameru is significant - apart from being in Southern India, the Philosophy followed was that of Dakshina School and not of the Vama School. ii) MAKUTAGAMA : Saiva Doctrine according to Makudagama is divided into Saiva - Pasupata, Soma and Lakula. ... (xxxxx ) iii) The same Magutakama enumerates the Siva "sristi" as follows :
In the middle of Bindu is Nada comes Dhvani. In the middle of Dhvani is Santa. That which is beyond Santa is Paratpara who is NATESVARA. THIS SANTYATITA, the beloved of Amba, is Dakshineswara, who resides in Sabha, for the protection of the Universe, performing constantly the cosmic dance : "palanartham .... xxxx .... paramakaranam "
iv) Concept of Panchadehamurthy .. then Nrittesvara @ Adalvallan ! v) Makudagama graphically sums up this concept of " Navatattva" worshipped in the followinbg order from bottom to top: Brahma - Vishnu - Rudra - Maheswara - bindu - Nadha - Sakthi - Siva. Finally with flower in hand, the priest invokes Tandavesvara ! " Brahmatattvam adhonysasya ... 14th line pushpahastaih sukhasana - " vi) Tandavamurthy worship as follows : " Brahma Visnusca ... 9 lines - navatathvamayam sthanam sarvasampatkaram -param - Ityadi Makuta .. "
Dr. R.Nagaswamy opines :
QUOTE : It is there that the Thandavamurthi is manifest; his space is the Urdhvasiras where the cosmic dance takes place; It is therefore appropriate that the 108 nritta Karanas are depicted around the wall of the first floor of Thanjavur temple " (Unquote)
Dr. Kalaikkovan thanked our Group for envisaging interest and will persue the data .. ==========
