UDAYARKUDI VS KATUMANNARKOVIL
  • freinds,
i went to kattumannar kovil yesterday. i saw the old siva temple and the town surrounding it. this place is called udayarkudi and is beleived to be the residential place of later cholas for some time( gangai kondam is 10 km away).

the town very adjacent to this sprang up in 13th century and is called veera-narayana-vinnagaram. subsequently called kandu-mannavar-kovil and later katu-mannar-kovil. this region is called kanadu in chola adminstrative divisions there fore kanadu mannavar for the vaishnava shrine.

the vaishnava quarters had over taken the shaiva quarters and now the place is simply katu-mannar-kovi. the twin towns of udayar-kudi and veeranarayana vinnagaram have lost their old names from the registries. but the siva kovil environs are still called as udayarkudi.

this vaishnavite overtake was only succesfull in this place and srimushnam. rest of the places the 14th century vaishnavite renaisence had not displaced the saivite dominance in any of the lower tanjore region.

nangoor dhivyadhesam temples are very small and are nowhere near saivite architectures.

  • Dear Gandhiram.

Pls put "Udayarkudi" in search box and see the discussions in our archieves.

Kalki mentions of Veeranarayana perumal koil ... so prior to RRC period.

That Siva temple in Kattumannarkoil is of Parantaka origin. ( 920 or so).. Not hymned in Thevaram.

Nangoor Divyadesams are of Thirumangai contributions.

There are 11 siva temples also in this area of same era.

    regards / sps
