Dear SPS one small change. Ramnad samasthanam has a king for the last few years.HRH Kumaran Sethupathi. he heads all the temple devasthanams built by his anscestors including rameshwaram.the queen gave up her position a few years ago. on the other hand sivaganga royal family and its numerous temples is headed by HRH Maduranthaka Nachiyar the queen.
It may sound odd for people from other parts of the state to hear about royalty but one should see how these families are treated in their erstwhile realms to beleive it.
Both these families have built and maintained some of the best temples in south tamilnadu.
uthirakosamangai is a very mystic temple. a jade nadaraja which would reportedly split when exposed to sunlight and is hence covered by sandal on 364 days a year. But the most fascinating tale is about the sahasra linga present here with some long grooves on it. it is actualy the tale of how the god shiva of this temple appears to Mandothari ( Mrs. Ravanan) as a cute little baby. prefering to appear in the representation of the type of love she had for him. mandothari had actually been praying to shiva with motherly affection. even ravana fascinated by the baby picks him up and hugs him. so neighbouring temples Rameshwaram and uthirakosamangai are connected with the two battlers in the ramayana war? fascinating.
