Really interesting to read these things. After seeing the "Hanuman and Sita" sculpture, I was confused with the following points. For the sake of others, I have uploaded them on the photo section. 1. Is the figure cluctching Sita Hanuman? If so, why is been depicted with wings on the left arm? On only one arm? 2. If it is not Hanuman, can it be Jatayu? If so, why there is no beak? The human nose is quite prominent. Also, the right wing in missing. 2. Correct me if I am wrong, When Hanuman proposes the idea of taking her from Ashoka forest to Lord Ram,, Sita refuses Hanuman's idea to carry her. There are two reasons Sita says: a. She wants Ram to fight with Ravana and come victorious. b. She can allow only Ram and not anyother male to touch her. Exception being Ravana, while her abduction. Hence, she prevents Ravana soming any closer by keeping the grass blade. In my view, this sculpture could be either 1. Ravana abducting Sita. Ravana could have been depicted like a Demon with sharp teeth (Which is seen in the photo). (I am asking myself...Why is Sita smiling during the abduction? :) ) 2. It could be Sugriva/Vali wth his consort.
In either case, I think it is not probable to label this as Hanuman and Sita.
I have seen many depictions of the ramayana in thai/indon where the features of characters are not confirming to what we have in india. This is especially true of the non human characters ( both good and bad) - the depiction of hanuman is at times grotosque. this could be due to the fact that rama katha was propagated via puppetry shows and could explain the distortions a bit. Have uploaded a few hanuman depictions in the photo columns incl a thai stamp. the facial features have a remarkable resemblance to the statue - The wing is still a mystery though
