Vadakkiruththal is a Jain theory of leaving their body by fasting unto death. The Chola and Pisiraanthiaar may have practised the faith. But the period you have mentioned is confusing.
No doubt the story was very famous among Tamil scholars, but the end was little different. What I have heard that the King and Poet did not see each other till their death. May be - Telepathi worked out? Venkatesh or SPS can explain more.
2005 i acted as a pisranthaiyar in our drama. As per the charactor pisranthaiyar is seeing the deadbody of koperuncholan and started vadakiruthal in the climax.
first part of the drama i acted as a Tondaiman with heavy costumes.
if any one required the script and cd of the play, please mail to me thanks for remembering the good old memories.

Dear Mr.S.balasubramani kalinga_tamil@yahoo.co.in
I heartfully extend my thanks for the support & co-ordination you had extended for the Play "Sanga Illakiyathil Natpu" (Friendship in Ancient Tamil Literature) and making it a grand success.
I wanted to tell some more facts related to the theme we selected for the drama viz., Friendship between King Adhiyamaan & Poet Avvaiyar. King Adhiyamaan was ruling Thagadur (Presently Dharmapuri District). The district got its name from the work dharmam which means gifting. Since Adhiyamaan had gifted the precious Amla he got to Avaiyar, the district came to be known as Dharmapuri.
Once again I thank you for your efforts and wish you all success for your kalinga_tamil.
Please convey our congratulations to all the persons who have acted in the bilingual play. The concept was unique . Every actor played his/her role to perfection. The settings and make-up quitee good. It was as if watching a professional drama troupe performing.
Great effort by the entire team. We look forward to such innovative plays in future as well.
