Hi sps sir,
sorry for this simple questions - but does varman - stand for its literal translation - meaning protector. who is the first indian king with this surname. i read that in the first hindu settlements in funan - the kings already started taking this prefix - but the first official name i get in searches is king ishana varman ( kambodia) - 616 -635 AD.

Last Saturday, I attended a lecture by Dr. Asko Parpolo at the Roja Muthiah Library. He showed a decipherment of a Indus seal ( with two eyes and another symbol ) as "KanKaani" ( Supervisor ) in Tamil! But he didnt accept the bilingual seal found in Jaffna, figured in some books written by Prof. Mathivanan. Whereas the stone axe founded near Kumbakonam by a Tamil teacher has been accepted by the scholarly world and our Iravatham Mahadevan has given a decipherment.
I think the Harappan-Dravidian link is a long way to go, until Indus sites / seals are reported in the south.
