For personal history records, we can use a simple text file with dates on it. As internet has become prevalent and lot of spammers/hackers out there. Please check news about 'Sarah Pallin yahoo account hacked' (US Vice-Presidential Candidate) using her personal public information of age, zip (pin) code, where she met her husband first time as security question.
Do encourage to do blogs provided your personal identification is not revealed too much.
