ARIYALUR: Stucco works on `Simha keni' (Lion Well) in the Chola-built temple of Lord Brahadeeswarar at Gangaikondacholapuram in the district, renovated by the ASI, have been vandalised.

Names and initials have been carved using sharp-edged weapons on it.
  • Yes, this is not a new news. When we went to Kumbakonam to our seminar via
GKC, I saw the lion fully carved with graffiti. When I asked the ASI person
there, he said guys sneak there at all times and write. Not really a
convincing answer. I will try to post the photo in the groups' photo
    session.

  • Dear Vj,

Did you see anything in our GKC collections? but there is only one watchman
for that temple when I visited. The compound walls are very less height so
anybody can come inside even after the temple gates are closed. However the
cleanliness of this temple is very good.

We need to educate people on this issues. When I was in school we used to go
and clean the temples as NSS volunteers, I don't know what the present day
    NSS people do?
