  • R.C.Majumdar has written an excellent article on Leyden grants in EI. There he had compared this grant with that of a similar grant in North India wherein the local king provides endowments to the vihara built by sailendra kings. In other words there were precedences to aanaimangalam grants. Here, the sailendra kings request local king's support for the continued existence of the vihara.

Based on the term "Ivviharaikku Vendum nivandhathiruku" as mentioned in rajaraja's grant, I had argued in my paper that Sailendra king made an explicit request to rajaraja. Dr.Kalaikkovan corrected me saying that the terminology would be different if it were the case. So I changed this view suitably.

Also, mention should be made that the land owners did not honor their commitment to buddhist management (The term used here for the management of vihara in itself is a topic of discussion) after rajaraja's period. That only necessitated reconfirmation of rights during kulothunga's time - hence the smaller leyden grants.
  • That is enlightening... !

    Thanks dear Gokul.

And re Kadam = Kedah .. yeah...

Tho' KAN pointed out others views did exist (in his South East Asia book) ,he also reconfirms this as settled fact.

    regards / sps
