There were Mutharayas in Senthalai / near Tirukandiyur also...
like wise whether the Kings stayed in Oraiyur / Pazhayarai.. in early Chola period ...
There was overlapping of Chola Kingdom - fm 850 CE Vijayalaya - with the Pallavas around Thanjai and the fact that Pallavas were present in Tirukandiyur and had a Palace too just prior to 900 CE ... which was later on occupied by Sundara chola too... (supposedly post AK Murder - 965 places Sethuraman / 969 is also considered ).
Therefore there should have been Chola Palaces - in Oraiyur - Thanjai (may be Old thanjai was Tirukandiyur - Sendalai - Pazharayai - tiruvarur - and of course Kanchi too - among other places!!
MAIN PALACE - attached to Administrative HQ - could have remained the same for a longer duration.. in accordance with the activities of the King.
For instance, Uthama's inscriptions describe of Pazhayarai - Kanchi.. RRC - mention of thiruvallam palace also there... RjC - chidambaram - Thanjai - GKC - tiruvarur .. !!
Thanjai ma manikkovil ( 1 of 108 divyadesam - actually 3 temples refered by alwars as Thanjai ma manikkovil, Thanjaiyali nagar and Manikkundram are) far off from present Tanjai and almost near Thirukkandiyur.
Hence the concept of old thanjai is intresting.
secondly there are newses that cholas took Thanjai from Aparajitha according to Indalur plates. But still there is no officialconfirmation on that.
