That's what I've heard too .
And everybody snaps their fingers at this deity/devotee because they're supposed to marking their attendance, while in reality, you're supposed to be brushing your hands off, in indication that you haven't stolen anything from the temple complex. :-)
I was in Karur, near trichy last week. I have a small Pillayar temple there built by my Grand Father. Besides it, stands the hude temple of Soundaraambigai, Alankaaravalli ( The great lord Shiva marries her like Aandaal form Ranganatha swamy) Undanurai Pashupatheeshwara.
This temple has Chandikeshvari rather tham Chandikeshvara. One of teh locla resident told me that, this temple is related to Mucukundha Cholan. I could not get juch information about this, due to lack of time.
It is in this temple, lies the samadhi of Siddhar Karuvooraar, who helped Great RajaRaja Cholan for 'Ashtabandhanam'.
