Such cruel tsunamis are not new to tamil country - we have lost the old (original) madurai, the first capital of pandiyas as well as kapaatapuram, the second capital as well. Those I believe are still waiting under the sea to be discovered and studied.
With one such thing happening right before our very eyes, we can imagine how people would have suffered. Not sure if the ancient disasters were also tsunamis or just rise of sea level due to artic ice melting.
Similarly the sea bed rose in mahamallapuram swallowing some temples with it. Actually the pallikonda perumal housed in shore temple was actually lying in open air near the sea shore in a natural rock formation. Read Dr.Nalini's aanmavin raagangal in http://www.varalaaru.com issue 4.
While reading a few stories of Tiruvilayadal puranam, I was wondering how come the sea can come till Madurai and engulf it. So there was another Madurai near the shore? Can you tell me todays location where the original Madurai was supposed to be in?
Dear Satish The legend and myths claim that there was a sizable land mass south of kanyakumari known also as the lemuria or kumarikandam which was lost to kadarkol
Whethere it was a Tsunami or rice in water levels due to arctic icemelting we do not know...moare like the first than the second because it happened rapidly not gving people a chance...
The first tamil sangam was held in Then madurai The second was in Kapadapuram bith under water
Thanks for the info..I used to wonder whether there was any vada madurai, when I hear songs like "Then madurai vaigai nadhi..." etc. Also I could not belive sea water coming till madurai when I read a few stories of Tiruvilayadal puram. Now I got clarity. Thanks once again.
